Finding Values, Zeros, Maximums and Minimums of functions on the TI-83

Finding Values:

  1. Press Y= and enter your function. For example, y = -x^2 +8x –5
  2. Press Graph
  3. Find an appropriate window for your function. The window must contain the x-coordinate of the value you are looking for.
  4. Press Trace
  5. Type the x-coordinate and press enter.
  6.  

    Finding Zeros:

  7. Press Y= and enter your function. For example, y = -x^2 +8x –5
  8. Press Graph
  9. Find an appropriate window for your function. Find one that displays the location of the zero (y1=0).
  10. Press 2nd Trace for Calc
  11. Select 2: Zero
  12. Move cursor to the left of the zero and press Enter. (leftbound)
  13. Move cursor to the right of the zero and press Enter. (rightbound)
  14. Move cursor back towards the zero and press Enter. (guess)
  15. The cursor will move to the zero and the coordinates will be displayed.

Finding a Maximum:

  1. Press Y= and enter your function. For example, y = -x^2 +8x –5
  2. Press Graph
  3. Find an appropriate window for your function. Find one that displays the location of the maximum value.
  4. Press 2nd Trace for Calc
  5. Select 4: Maximum
  6. Move cursor to the left of the max. and press Enter. (leftbound)
  7. Move cursor to the right of the max. and press Enter. (rightbound)
  8. Move cursor back towards the max. and press Enter. (guess)
  9. The cursor will move to the max. and the coordinates will be displayed.

Finding a Minimum:

  1. Press Y= and enter your function. For example, y = -x^2 +8x –5
  2. Press Graph
  3. Find an appropriate window for your function. Find one that displays the location of the minimum value.
  4. Press 2nd Trace for Calc
  5. Select 3: Minimum
  6. Move cursor to the left of the min.. and press Enter. (leftbound)
  7. Move cursor to the right of the min. and press Enter. (rightbound)
  8. Move cursor back towards the min. and press Enter. (guess)
  9. The cursor will move to the min and the coordinates will be displayed.
