Finding Values, Zeros, Maximums and Minimums of functions on the TI-83
Finding Values:
- Press Y= and enter your function. For example, y = -x^2 +8x –5
- Press Graph
- Find an appropriate window for your function. The window must contain the x-coordinate of the value you are looking for.
- Press Trace
- Type the x-coordinate and press enter.
Finding Zeros:
- Press Y= and enter your function. For example, y = -x^2 +8x –5
- Press Graph
- Find an appropriate window for your function. Find one that displays the location of the zero (y1=0).
- Press 2nd Trace for Calc
- Select 2: Zero
- Move cursor to the left of the zero and press Enter. (leftbound)
- Move cursor to the right of the zero and press Enter. (rightbound)
- Move cursor back towards the zero and press Enter. (guess)
- The cursor will move to the zero and the coordinates will be displayed.
Finding a Maximum:
- Press Y= and enter your function. For example, y = -x^2 +8x –5
- Press Graph
- Find an appropriate window for your function. Find one that displays the location of the maximum value.
- Press 2nd Trace for Calc
- Select 4: Maximum
- Move cursor to the left of the max. and press Enter. (leftbound)
- Move cursor to the right of the max. and press Enter. (rightbound)
- Move cursor back towards the max. and press Enter. (guess)
- The cursor will move to the max. and the coordinates will be displayed.
Finding a Minimum:
- Press Y= and enter your function. For example, y = -x^2 +8x –5
- Press Graph
- Find an appropriate window for your function. Find one that displays the location of the minimum value.
- Press 2nd Trace for Calc
- Select 3: Minimum
- Move cursor to the left of the min.. and press Enter. (leftbound)
- Move cursor to the right of the min. and press Enter. (rightbound)
- Move cursor back towards the min. and press Enter. (guess)
- The cursor will move to the min and the coordinates will be displayed.
